Engineering Design
Introduction
Cambridge National Engineering Design Level 1/ Level 2
(1) In Year 9, students have the opportunity to step into the exciting world of engineering through the OCR Engineering Design option.
OCR Engineering Design is a comprehensive course that teaches students the essential skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the field of engineering design.
(2) In Engineering Design, students learn a range of different skills which develop their confidence and creativity. With the new reforms, students are inspired and equipped to enable them to communicate their thoughts and ideas through a variety of different ways, design process, types of drawings, which influences design, and the use of computer-aided design (CAD) in Engineering.
(3) There are three units of assessment. Students must complete all three units of the course to achieve the qualification.
All results are awarded on the following scale:
Level 2 – Distinction star * (*2),
Distinction (D2),
Merit (M2),
Pass (P2)
Level 1 – Distinction (D1),
Merit (M1),
Pass (P1) and Unclassified.
(4) What knowledge and skills will you develop as part of this qualification.
This qualification will enable you to learn about the process of engineering design, and understand how it can be used to design effective solutions for a given design brief. You will develop the ability to communicate your design ideas through the use of sketches and engineering drawings and computer aided design. You will also be able to evaluate the design of a product, through the disassembly of existing products or the use of modelling for new designs.
How might these be of use and value in further studies?
These skills will help you progress onto further study in the engineering design and development sector. This may be Level 3 vocational qualifications, such as the Cambridge Technical in Engineering, A Levels, such as A Level Design and Technology, or one of the number of Design and Development Technician Apprenticeships.
This course covers a range of units including Unit R038 Principles of engineering design, Unit R039 Communicating designs, and Unit R040 Design, evaluation, and modelling.
(5) Unit R038 focuses on the fundamental principles of engineering design. Students will learn about the design process, problem-solving techniques, and how to apply engineering principles to real-world challenges. This unit lays the foundation for the rest of the course, teaching students the skills they need to create innovative and functional designs.
Unit R039 Communicating designs
Unit R039 teaches students how to effectively communicate their design ideas and concepts. From sketching and technical drawing to CAD software and presentation skills, students will learn how to convey their designs clearly and accurately. Effective communication is essential in the field of engineering, and this unit prepares students to effectively communicate their ideas to clients, colleagues, and stakeholders.
Unit R040 Design, evaluation, and modelling
Unit R040 focuses on the evaluation and testing of designs. Students will learn how to assess the performance of their designs using a variety of methods, such as prototype testing, simulation, and modelling. This unit also covers the importance of evaluating the environmental impact of designs, ensuring that students consider sustainability and ethical considerations in their engineering projects.
Conclusion
This is not just a woodwork subject – students will learn how to create innovative designs, communicate their ideas effectively, and evaluate the performance of their designs. This course sets students up for success in future engineering studies and careers, and provides a solid foundation for further exploration in the field of engineering.
