Lealands High School

Non-Fiction Themed Literacy Week

World Book Day (Thursday 2nd March) is fast approaching and to promote the importance of reading and literacy, Lealands High School will be offering students an adapted curriculum during the week commencing Monday 27th February 2017.

Throughout the week, lessons for students in Years 7-9 will have a non-fiction inspired focus (with a primary emphasis placed on the reading of newspapers and magazines) and there will be many opportunities for students to enjoy reading independently.

Some students will be particularly lucky this year as we will be visited by local blogger and reading enthusiast Joseph Powell (his log can be viewed at https://www.learngrowdevelop.com/). He will be running a number of workshops throughout the day and his visit is one we are very much looking forward to.

As is the tradition at Lealands, during the first week of March, there will be a number of other reading inspired events for students to enjoy, including a free book swap, a book fair, games and competitions in the LRC and a day of dressing up as our favourite literary characters on Friday 3rd March. It is important that students do not see this as a non-uniform day. If students do not wish to join us in dressing up as their favourite character from a book, they will be required to wear their usual school uniform. Jeans and a t-shirt will not be permitted without literary justifications.

Additionally, for the week to be a success, it will be essential that all students have at least one 'Accelerated Reader' book with them at all times (which is in line with out normal expectations). Our school library is well stocked with qualifying books, but should you want to supply a book(s) for your child, can you please check www.arbookfind.co.uk to ensure it is a book on which a quiz can be completed. Could you also please make a note of the 'quiz number' either inside the front cover of the book or inside their learning diary.

As ever, there will be a multitude of prizes available for those students who show the most commitment and enthusiasm towards the initiative, with awards for readers of all abilities. There will also be a special prize of an Amazon Fire tablet for one student from each year group who demonstrates outstanding enthusiasm and achievement throughout the week.

We thank you for your continued support with the school's drive to improve the literacy levels of all its students.
